International and Regional Economic Blocs

The number, scope and activities of international organizations and institutions significantly increased in the 20th century. The establishment of the league of National and united nations, as two international organizations , is considered as the milestone in the history of international organizations. Some of these organizations are involved in global governing and international economic development.
Below are some of the economic organizations and regional blocs which Iran participated in:

World Trade Organization (WTO)

The WTO emerged out of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) in 1995; it is an arrangement across countries that serves as a forum for negotiations on trading rules as well as a mechanism for dispute settlements in trade issues.

Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF)

The GECF is an intergovernmental organization that provides a framework for exchanging experience and information among its member countries.

Eurasian Economic Union

The Eurasian Economic Union is an international organization for regional economic integration. It has international legal personality and is established by the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union in 2014.

The Asia Cooperation Dialogue(ACD)

The Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) was established in June 2002 in Cha-Am, Thailand, where 18 Asian Foreign Ministers met together for the first time to promote cooperation at a continental level. Its secretariat is in Kuwait City.

Colombo Plan

The Colombo Plan for Cooperative Economic and Social Development in Asia and the Pacific was conceived at the Commonwealth Conference on Foreign Affairs held in Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in January 1950 and was launched on 1 July 1951 as a cooperative venture for the economic and social advancement of the peoples of South and Southeast Asia.

Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC)

BSEC came into existence as a unique and promising model of multilateral political and economic initiative with the signing of the Istanbul Summit Declaration and the Bosporus Statement by the Heads of State and Government of the countries in the region, on 25 June1992.

D-8 Organization for Economic Corporation

D-8, also known as Developing-8, is an organization for development cooperation among the following countries: Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.

The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA)

IORA is an inter-governmental organization which was established on 7 March 1997. The Association is intended to facilitate and promote economic co-operation, bringing together inter-alia representatives of Member States’ governments, businesses and academia.

Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO)

Founded as the Regional Cooperation for Development (RCD) in 1964 by the Iran, Pakistan and the Türkiye, the Forum was rechristened as the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) in 1985.
